About Transoranje School for the Deaf and its learners

Our beneficiary is Transoranje School for the Deaf that provides specialized education to profoundly Deaf learners from the age of 3 years up to Grade 12. Transoranje School is a Public School but also a Non-Profit Organization.  Transoranje School for the Deaf was established at Pretoria West in August 1954.

The school caters to the complete education and well-being of about 210 learners with deafness from a diverse cross-section of personal, social and economic backgrounds.

Transoranje School for the Deaf plays a vital role in the community by focusing on the specialized needs of learners with deafness from all walks of life. Some of the school’s learners are further disadvantaged by having multiple disabilities: some are also intellectually challenged, physically- or visually impaired.

The school runs hostels, home to about 80 learners. The reasons for the hostels are twofold:

  • the school caters to learners from many regions of South Africa; and
  • approximately 60%+ of the learners come from needy homes, difficult situations and/or disadvantaged communities.
